Who Are We?

Four years ago 5 of us Dorset artists got together with the aim of opening a small art and craft gallery near Dorchester.

Winterborne Monkton's old village school became the focus for our dream.

We renovated the building inside and out, fitted it with new lights and a hanging system, and opened in time for Easter 2002.

Since then our team has grown and changed and we have added other events to our activities at the Gallery, including festivals and tuition.

You can read about our plans for 2005 here on our site, find out about our team and see what happened in years past.

We'd love to hear from you, and to welcome you to our Gallery if you have time to visit us. We're only a stone's throw from Dorchester and Weymouth and can almost always offer you a cuppa if you're passing by!

We hope you'll call in and see us.

A group of Dorset Artists worked together during 2004 to produce a new series of original works based on material and artefacts from the Dorset County Museum in Dorchester.

Artists involved included sculptors, writers, painters, potters, landscape and textile artists.

The creation of the new artworks was accompanied by public events and masterclasses by the artists and experts from the Museum.

Throughout the year different groups of artists and experts from the Museum met up to look into the wealth of exhibits and artefacts within the museum.

The works culminated in a great exhibition from October 2004 to January 2005.

The works on show were inspired by exhibits as diverse as pressed flowers and plants, insects, writing by local authors, pottery sherds, jewellery, fossils and clothing.

Another dimension of the project was artwork created outside in the countryside. In this photo, Bill Crumbleholme, the driving force behind of Artyfacts, stands in Thorncombe Woods near Dorchester, at the foot of a huge Butterfly that he and Jon Sloper created at the start of 2004.

Some of the work was figurative, exploring the nature of the subjects in a pure representational manner. Other work presented themes in abstract ways and through lateral thought.

This is one of the exquisite paintings of Roman flora that Sally Pinhey created as part of her response to the Artyfacts experience.

Eileen Sarup explored the geology and the strata of the landscape through her extraordinary new felt works.

We are a group of Dorset-based artists and craftworkers who have joined together to bring our work into the public domain and contribute together to the development and promotion of visual and contemporary arts.

This year we'd like to team up with local Bed and Breakfast in and around Dorchester and Weymouth to offer art and craft experiences for visitors to the area.

We can provide individual or group tuition for a couple of hours, or half or a whole day at our lovely Gallery in Winterborne Monkton. We can offer ceramic or painting events from beginner to intermediate level. These are ideal wet-weather activities at a leisurely pace.

In exchange for advertising our events we'd like to advertise the Bed and Breakfasts in return on our website and by personal recommendation at the Gallery.

Contact us if you want to participate in this joint promotion.

We're always thinking up new activities and events for people to join in with. If you'd like to keep in touch with our latest plans then send us your name and email address and we'll drop you a line whenever there's something new taking place.
